Brendan Rodgers Reacts to Criticism of Celtic Board
Celtic have made a worse start this season, after the first 18 league games, than they did in the 2020/21 season. Just that speaks volumes of the trouble Brendan Rodgers' team find themselves in already.
The January transfer window is an opportunity for the club to refresh and reset. They still have three games to play before that and considering the way things are going, it would not be a surprise to see them drop points in more than one.
A lot of fans are calling for Rodgers to be sacked already. Many supporters do not think that the squad is good enough and the manager deserves backing in January.
At the same time, there are quite a few who have turned their focus towards the board. If you take out Ange Postecoglou's first season at the club, the transfers have been terrible.
The only two players signed last season who made an impression were Alistair Johnston and Aaron Mooy. This season, only Luis Palma has been regularly involved in the starting XI.
That is three players out of twenty new signings made over the past three transfer windows. Not nearly good enough.
The latest setback for Celtic was a 0-2 defeat at home against Hearts. 'Sack the board' chants could be heard inside the stadium on the day, as supporters have seen their side drop points way too frequently in recent weeks.
Over the last five league games, they have won just two, lost twice and drawn once. Not good enough for Celtic. Not even close.
According to Sky Sports, asked about the criticism of the board, Rodgers said: "You do your talking on the pitch and today was on myself and the players. Today was nowhere near the level of a Celtic player and that is something that falls on me. So I need to find the answers for this group and to ensure we can gain that consistency in the team."
The fact of the matter is that Celtic are in a messy situation right now and need to find a way out quickly. Otherwise, the Rangers might run away in the league title race.
It was merely a couple of months ago that the Rangers had looked down and out. Things move fast. So, there is no reason to think that Celtic cannot salvage the season from here. After all, the Ibrox club have not been fantastic themselves and are beatable.
Celtic need to be absolutely spot on from now until the end of the season though. That is easier said than done, for a club that has made so many mistakes in recent times.
