Celtic Back in Race For Striker But Club Want €10 Million Fee
Will Celtic sign a striker in January? That is one of the big questions surrounding the Scottish champions right now as we are less than a month away from the winter transfer window opening.
Celtic fans would like to see the club strengthen in a few positions this January. A new striker has to be near the top of their transfer wish list.
Kyogo Furuhashi has struggled to match the heights from last season when he scored 34 goals. The Japanese striker has been solid but he is not seeing as much of the ball as he used to under Ange Postecoglou and that clearly has made him less effective.
Oh Hyeon-gyu has impressed in recent weeks but the sample size is too small in his case. Can he perform like this consistently? We do not know the answer to that question.
One could argue that Celtic have needed a third striker regardless of Kyogo and Oh's form. The Hoops are one of the busiest teams in world football and just two strikers is not enough.
Now, add the fact that the AFC Asian Cup is starting in January, which could see both Kyogo and Oh called up, and it becomes clear that Celtic need to bring in a new striker in January.
Most of the talk recently has been about signing someone from the Premiership. Lawrence Shankland would be the reliable option, as he has a proven track record of performing in Scotland for years. Bojan Miovski seems to have a higher ceiling.
There is another striker who appears to be on Celtic's radar. Mathias Kvistgaarden of Brondby IF.
According to Tipsbladet, football commentator and editor Troels Bager Thøgersen said about Kvistgaarden:
"I know from good sources in Scotland that Celtic are back on the pitch."
Brondby are not keen on parting ways with Kvistgaarden though. It could take a transfer fee of around €10 million to convince the club.
Kvistgaarden is considered one of the brightest talents in Danish football right now. According to Transfermarkt, he has 5 goals and 7 assists in 20 appearances this season for Brondby.
Celtic's Kvistgaarden is nothing new. It is believed that they had tried to sign him in the summer too. Will the Scottish champions make another attempt in the January transfer window? Let's wait and see.
