Scott Brown Names His Greatest Celtic Teammate

Scott Brown named the defender when asked by Ally McCoist about his greatest Celtic teammates.

Scott Brown had a legendary 14-year stint at Celtic, which saw him lift endless trophies and play with some fantastic players along the way, who not only achieved great things at Parkhead but after leaving as well.

For a player like Brown, who spent such a long time at a club like Celtic and most of it as captain, it might be hard to pick one standout teammate.

But if there was one, it looks like Virgil van Dijk would be the one who would get the former Celtic captain's nod.

According to talkSPORT, when Ally McCoist asked Brown to name his greatest teammates, he singled out the Liverpool captain as he said: "Virgil. He played in cruise control up here, he literally had a cigar out every game.

"He was like [Cameron] Carter-Vickers at the back, we could leave him one-v-one and the rest of us just ran forward."

Brown then added about Van Dijk and how good the Dutchman was for Celtic: "It was too easy for him! He was so good."

Van Dijk did not spend a long time playing for Celtic but it never was going to be for a player of his quality. Sooner or later, major clubs were going to come calling.

Van Dijk had been a little-known Dutch defender when he arrived at Celtic from FC Groningen. Over the next two years, he showed his quality not only in Scotland but at the highest level in the Champions League.

He was helped by the fact that Celtic were handed some massive ties in Europe during his two seasons at the club.

In the 2013/14 Champions League season, they came up against AC Milan, FC Barcelona and Ajax.

The following season, they were not able to qualify for the Champions League but did make it to the Europa League, where they faced Inter Milan.

After two seasons at Celtic, Van Dijk left for Southampton, a path often travelled by the club's players during that time.

Van Dijk's stint at Southampton was not going to be a long one either. He ended up becoming the most expensive defender in football history when Liverpool paid a £75 million transfer fee to sign him.

At Anfield, Van Dijk has established himself as one of the greats of the game and for a while, he might have been the best player in the world.
