Celtic Should Target Free Agent After Summer Deadline Day
Celtic finished the summer transfer window strong. The prominent positions of need were on the wing and at centre-back, which have been dealt a blow with departures and injuries. Luis Palma and Nat Phillips arrived to hopefully fill those voids.
A position that hasn't been of need in recent times is goalkeeper since they brought in Joe Hart from Tottenham Hotspur during the 2021 summer transfer window.
Hart signed a three-year deal with Celtic and has made more than a hundred appearances for the club since being brought in. They've had success with him in the net, dominating the domestic competitions, but some of his mistakes have hurt the Scottish side in Europe.
With his deal set to expire at the conclusion of this season and his recent displays drawing criticism, bringing in another goalkeeper would not be a bad idea. Could his replacement be available as a free agent?
According to the highly-reliable Anthony Joseph, French club OGC Nice have parted ways with Kasper Schmeichel by terminating the goalkeeper's contract by mutual consent. So, he is now a free agent.
Schmeichel was the goalkeeper of English club Leicester City for 11 years, making almost 500 appearances for them across all competitions for The Foxes.
The Danish international has been one of the top goalkeepers in the world over the past decade, winning both the Premier League and the FA Cup with Leicester City.
The 36-year-old is now a free agent and available to sign with any club. Should Celtic make a move and bring him in as competition for Hart?
Whether Celtic want to bring in Schmeichel is another question. There are three goalkeepers on the roster already.
Benjamin Siegrist was expected to leave over the summer but has ended up staying on. So bringing in another one regardless of talent and past history, might not be something that the club is interested in now.
