Callum McGregor Proves Himself as Celtic Captain With Public Transfer Demand
When Callum McGregor was handed the captain's armband following Scott Brown's departure, there were many Celtic fans who did not believe that he was the man for the job. After all, he is a very different type of player and leader compared to Broony.
McGregor has proven himself as captain over the past two seasons, winning five trophies and helping rebuild the team following the disastrous 2020/21 season.
He might be in his most difficult period as Celtic captain right now though. The club have let slip of a commanding lead over Rangers in the league and allowed their Glasgow rivals not only back into the title race but also given them an opportunity to take the lead.
Perhaps, McGregor's best moment as a Celtic captain came after the loss to Hearts, as he openly called for signings to be made in January. According to the Daily Record, he said:
“Now we have to show why we’re Celtic players and why we have the privilege and responsibility to play for this club. The last three weeks have not been good enough. We’re fortunate that it’s December, there’s still a lot of football to be played.
“We’ve got a transfer window that can help the group and I’m almost certain that needs to be a big window to help us. We need players to help the squad. I’m not talking specifics, I’m talking quality coming through the door. That can be in any position, it’s the manager and those guys job to do that.
“But like I said, I think we need bodies and we need quality to come in and help us. Every season when we look at it, we want to be better. We come back in off wining a treble, how do we get better? You have to freshen up the place. You lose five or six big players from last season, so you then have to go and replace that if you want to keep on being successful.
“You have to find a way to rejuvenate the team and find the next Jota, find the next crop of players that are going to go and make you successful. So, that’s a target for the club all the time and they are always looking.
“Like I said, we’re missing the quality from last season and so we need to add to that. I think that’s obvious.”
Celtic must make signings next month. Rangers are the ones with all the momentum in the world right now.
They have been pretty consistent in the league following the arrival of Philippe Clement as the manager to replace Michael Beale. The club won the Scottish League Cup as well.
Trophies have not been easy to come by for the Ibrox side. So, the Scottish League Cup win will give them a major boost as well.
It is up to Celtic to get back on track and show why they are the champions of Scotland. If they cannot do that, they might end up having a season that rivals 2020/21.
